As early as 1782, Salisbury Cathedral had records of cats. An article in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal tells the story of a cat that returned to the cathedral after its owner moved to Oxford. The cat preferred life in Salisbury and made the 60-mile journey back.
In recent years, a friendly black cat named Woolf became one of the most famous cats at the cathedral. Woolf arrived here as a kitten with the lady appointed as dean. It enjoyed roaming around the cathedral precincts.
Although fed by the dean, Woolf quickly became friends with the cathedral maintenance workers, especially the glaziers responsible for the beautiful stained glass windows. It would climb ladders and scaffolding with them, and during lunch and break times, it would wander with them, looking for food.
Woolf brought joy to the cathedral staff and visitors for over 16 years but passed away in November 2011 due to illness. However, its memory lives on in souvenirs such as fridge magnets sold in the cathedral shop featuring its portrait.
